UMI3 (the technology transfer office for the University of Manchester) was looking to rebrand – as an organisation that commercialised innovations worth tens of millions it required an identity that had more charisma and quality…

We renamed the organisation Manchester Innovation Factory and the design strategy of ‘putting ideas to work’ became both the tagline and visual hook – evoking how seemingly small sparks of inspiration could open up tremendous opportunities, just as great oaks grow from acorns. The design for this thought also suggested a handy ‘M’ for Manchester.

We wanted a design language that felt as workmanlike and impactful as the character of Manchester (an industrial powerhouse since the era of steam). The simplicity of the visual components translated to a website rich in eclectic content.

Andrew Wilkinson, CEO of University of manchester Innovation Factory adds ‘Our new branding created by Silas and team have been fundamental in changing both the outward perception and internal culture of our organisation. The financial Year 20/21 was a record-breaking one for IP commercialisation at The University of Manchester. I am certain that the new branding played a significant part in helping achieve these outstanding results.’
